Camera: Last year I bought a Nikon D80 on the recommendation of a friend. He had been reading up on it on the Ken Rockwell site. Basically the D80 has the same quality pictures as the more expensive D200. It has the same 10.2 mega-pixel processor as the D200. I’m pretty happy with it. Although it’s heavy, it just feels right in my hand. But if I had the money I’d probably buy the D200 next. Apparently it has a better exposure meter, which means you don’t miss a shot, trying to perfect exposure.
Lenses: When I bought the camera, I also bought the Nikkor 18-200mm lens. I superb all- rounder. It’s fairly flexible. The images are sharp and auto-focus fast. It has built-in vibration reduction (VR), and really cut’s out your tripod. I didn’t realize this until I started shooting with another lens! This is important in longer lenses and lower light. It’s even good with macro shots. This lens will replace almost all of your lenses. All you’ll need extra is a UV filter.
Next in line to buy when I had the money was a Sigma 10-20mm lens. I could not afford the Nikkon 12-24mm, so the Sigma was the next choice. (The Tokina 12-24mm is also a good choice if you can find stock). The Sigma is good fun, because it has the widest angle - 10mm. It took me a day or two to master it, but most of my landscape work has been done on a Sigma 10-20mm. Look at some of the superb work done by Valpopando with this same setup. You’ll need a good tripod, head, and UV filter to keep the dust out..
Tripod: For my landscape work I use a Manfrotto 190 pro tripod, which I don’t think is available anymore, but the 3021BPRO will do. This tripod can also be adjusted for macro work. I also use a Manfrotto pistol grip head which allows you to quickly adjust for the shot.
Flash: I bought a Nikkon SB-600 Speedlight with iTTL. I can use the SB-600 off camera, and use the camera’s built in flash as a commander. Nice!
Dont forget to get a bag to put it all in. I bought a Lowepro Slingshot for quick camera access. It nicely holds, my camera, 2-4 lenses and the flash.
